Overview

Kate Somerville's Oil-Free Moisturizer provides intense hydration to the surface of your skin, while also working to improve skin's elasticity and fight the signs of aging. It contains no oils, parabens or fragrances, so it is gentle enough for sensitive skin and won't clog pores. It is a lightweight formula that contains a unique blend of ingredients including Pepha®-Tight, Sepilift™ and Red Marine Algae. Pepha-Tight tones and hydrates the skin while working to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Sepilift™ helps to firm and smooth skin, and Red Marine Algae has powerful amino acids that encourage collagen production and improve skin's elasticity. The moisturizer is designed to absorb excess oil and reflect light, so your complexion is left looking youthful and luminous.

You can purchase Kate Somerville Oil-Free Moisturizer on Sephora.com or Skinstore.com for $65.

Product Report Card Grade

We give Kate Somerville's Oil-Free Moisturizer a B+ because it incorporates moisturizing and anti-aging ingredients that help to improve the overall tone and texture of your skin. If you have extremely dry skin, you may need more hydration, but, otherwise, this is a great moisturizer for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin since it doesn’t contain oil, fragrance or dye. That said, we had to deduct some points because it is extremely expensive and because it doesn’t contain as many beneficial ingredients as the marketing would have you believe.

Active Ingredients
The lightweight moisturizer features Pepha®-Tight, Sepilift™ and Red Marine Algae, which work together to provide skin with moisturizing and anti-aging benefits. Pepha®-Tight is algae-based skin tightener that has anti-wrinkle, firming, toning and moisturizing properties. In the long term, it also helps to strengthen the skin's connective tissue. Sepilift™ has a high concentration of Hydroxyproline, the primary molecular constituent of collagen, and, by increasing collagen levels, it is able to help firm and smooth skin. Lastly, Red Marine Algae has powerful amino acids that encourage increased collagen production and cell turnover. This helps to improve skin's elasticity.
The lightweight moisturizer features a combination of active ingredients including mucopolysaccharides, azulene, allantoin, vitamin E and vitamin B5. Mucopolysaccharides provide intense oil-free hydration, while azulene, a chamomile derivative, and allantoin, an anti-irritant, help to calm and soothe your skin. Vitamin E protects your skin from environmental damage, and vitamin B5 works to promote cellular renewal and heal damaged skin.
The lightweight moisturizer's active ingredients include pure aloe vera, grapeseed extract and vitamins A, E and C. Aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and glycerin help to attract moisture to the skin, while squalene (a derivative of an emollient found in healthy skin) and dimethicone help to seal in that moisture. Meanwhile, grapeseed extract and vitamins A, C and E offer antioxidant protection against environmental damage and also nourish skin to improve its elasticity and tone.

Reputation

Kate Somerville's Oil-Free Moisturizer gets very good feedback from customers on Sephora (4.3/5 out of 129 reviews) and on QVC.com (4.9/5 out of 32 reviews). However, Paula Begoun, a skincare and cosmetics expert who conducts reviews on products using scientific research, didn't think this was a great product, especially considering how expensive it is. She says it would be better if Kate Somerville included some potent antioxidants and at least 1 or 2 cell-communicating ingredients. She also claims that the tightening and toning effects are due to the amount of a "film-forming agent (think hairspray type ingredient) in the moisturizer but that isn't the best for skin". In most of the reviews I saw, customers were happy with the product but complained about the cost. If you are already a fan of Kate Somerville, you should definitely give it a try, but, otherwise, you can probably get the same or better results from a less expensive brand.
