Overview

NEMO Equipment, Inc. was started in 2002 with the intention of bringing high-level design and engineering to the outdoor industry. With its headquarters strategically located near the White Mountain Region, RISD and MIT, NEMO leverages the resources around it to create innovative and high quality equipment for outdoor adventure and survival. Despite being a relatively young company, NEMO has already experienced success with products such as Losi 3P tent. The Losi 3P is a three-season, freestanding tent for backpacking or car camping with friends. If you are familiar with its equally popular predecessor, the Losi 2P, the Losi 3P is a slightly larger (and subsequently heavier) version of the same design. Like the original, the Losi 3P has a unique pole construction that enhances the stability of the tent, as well as increases the vertical slope of the walls to create a more open and spacious interior. It has fifty square feet of sleeping space that will fit three people comfortably, and it has twenty-four square feet of vestibule space for storing gear or even cooking if the weather is bad. In terms of ventilation, the Losi 3P has a full mesh inner tent that can be used by itself on summer nights, or it has a durable, waterproof fly with opposing and adjustable door vents for use in cooler or wet conditions. The interior of the Losi 3P includes a removable Gear Caddy with multiple pockets for organizing essential items. The Gear Caddy also has a LightPocket™ that holds your headlamp and has a diffusing fabric to provide even lighting in the tent. The Losi 3P offers as much space and comfort possible for three people in this weight category.

The NEMO Losi 3P retails for around $450 and can be purchased on NEMOequipment.com or on other online retailers like REI.com, EMS.com or Backcountry.com.

Product Report Card Grade

We give Nemo’s Losi 3P an A- because it is an incredibly spacious, comfortable tent with ample storage. We really like that it is quick and easy to pitch and that it offers some cool features like the Gear Caddy and LightPocket™. We had to deduct a few points because it is heavier than other 3-person tents and some customers felt it was difficult to break down.

Pros
one of the most spacious 3-person tents on the market; good ceiling height and storage space for its category; easy to set up with DAC® Jake's Feet system; good ventilation; good weather/water resistance; multi-pocket organizer panel is a step up from just normal tent pockets; reflective guy lines for nighttime visibility; NEMO Equipment, Inc. makes a huge effort to be a green company
exceptionally lightweight 2-person tent; stable, "bombproof" design that performs extremely well even in severe weather conditions; features improved ventilation system compared to other tents in the Quasar series
relatively inexpensive family tent with 160 ft² of space; vertical walls offer more interior space; interior door offers privacy and great ventilation; ability to block windows in the screen room for additional privacy/weather protection; good water resistance; E! Power port
Cons
relatively expensive; it's on the heavier side for tents in this category; some reviewers thought it was really difficult to get the poles to release during takedown
very expensive; inner first pitching could be problematic in wet conditions
screen room doesn't have a floor and the sod cloth didn't protect a few reviewers from insects (and even a small animal) from getting into the tent; cabin style tents are very unstable in windy conditions because of their high walls; flat top means water can pool on the fly if you don't use guylines to change the slope; pretty heavy

Set Up
One person can quickly and easily set up the tent in under 10 minutes because it features the DAC® Jake's Feet corner anchor system. Basically, it uses ball and socket attachments that lock in the main poles and then act as levers to keep the tent corners grounded while the rainfly is pulled over the top of the tent. DAC® J-Stakes are also available if extra stability is required in windy conditions.
It does not have a fast pitch option, but it can be easily set up in about 15 minutes since it has color-coded poles and continuous pole sleeves on the four poles. The inner tent must be pitched first, and then the flysheet and enhanced guy line system with titanium pegs help secure it to the ground.
Two people can easily set up the tent in about 20 minutes thanks to its shockcorded steel and fiberglass frame, clip attachments, and ring and pin assembly. You won't need to use stakes or guy lines except in case of severe weather.
Extras
Tent features the LightPocket™, which holds your headlamp and has a diffusing fabric to provide even lighting in the tent.
This is an updated version of the popular tent and features a redesigned inner tent that is lighter and better ventilated.
Designed to accommodate the Eureka! rope light if you want to purchase one ($20).

Reputation

The NEMO Losi 3P has received very positive online reviews from customers. It got a 4.3/5 on REI.com (47 reviews), a 4.5/5 on EMS.com (8 reviews) and a 4/5 on Trailspace.com (7 reviews). In addition to positive customer reviews, Outside Magazine recognized it with its "Gear of the Year" award in 2009, and Backpacker's Magazine called it the "Best All Around Three Person Tent" in 2009. While its not the lightest tent in its category for backpacking, customers didn't seem to mind given the overall comfort of the tent for 3 people and the fact that you can share the weight on the trail with your partner(s). Additionally, the convenience of two doors and ample storage space in the Losi 3P cannot be overlooked, especially when you are camping with friends or family. Overall, the Losi 3P is an excellent buy with all the comfort and versatility needed in a three-season, three-person tent.
