We give Maytag's M1TXEGMY a B and our Teacher's Pet Award. It is a good top-freezer refrigerator that won't break the bank and has convenient features like a factory-installed automatic icemaker and two FreshLock™ crispers. You can't expect many bells and whistles at this price point, but most customers have been very happy with the machine's ENERGY STAR® rating and its overall temperature performance and useable capacity. That said, we had to deduct points because it only has one control knob to adjust the temperature in the fridge and the freezer, so you don't have precise control over the individual compartments, which isn't ideal. Also, some customers thought the design of the shelving system was flawed, and others were annoyed that the freezer doesn't have a light. Feedback on the machine's noise level was very mixed. Some people thought it was really quiet, while some thought it was really loud. We'd suggest checking it out in person if you think a refrigerator with an average noise level could be bothersome.
Energy Star® qualified, the M1TXEGMY consumes 410 kWh of electricity a year, and Maytag estimates that it will cost you about $44 a year to run. Its cooling system consists of a single compressor and single evaporator, which control temperatures in the fridge and freezer simultaneously. For optimal humidity and temperature conditions, the M1TXEGMY also features automatic moisture control, a frost-free freezer, energy-efficient foam insulation and the Cool Flow™ Ventilation System for improved cold air circulation in both compartments. You can monitor and adjust fridge and freezer temperatures through a single knob/thermostat conveniently located at the front of the fridge.
The Maytag M1TXEGMY has a total capacity of 20.6 cu. ft. The fridge and freezer both provide an adequate amount of storage space for a small household with capacities around 14.5 cu. ft. and 6.2 cu. ft. respectively. The fridge has two full-width Spill-Catcher™ glass shelves that are adjustable and can therefore accommodate a wide variety of food items. In terms of drawers, it also has two FreshLock™ crisper drawers for fruits and vegetables and a smaller meat/deli drawer that is not temperature controlled. The fridge door has three adjustable door bins and three stationary door bins including one dairy bin and four gallon-size bins. The freezer has one flex wire shelf and two full-width door bins, but none are adjustable.
In addition to helping you cut your energy bills, this affordable refrigerator also offers some convenient features such as a factory-installed automatic icemaker and two FreshLock™ humidity controlled crispers to keep your fruits and veggies fresh. Unfortunately the icemaker does not have a built-in water filter, and, while there is incandescent interior lighting in the fridge, there is no light in the freezer. Lastly, the refrigerator does not have an open door alert. As mentioned however, you can't really expect too many bells and whistles for less than $1000.
ADA-complaint, the M1TXEGMY is a top-freezer refrigerator with a pull freezer door. It is designed in a traditional style with flat, textured doors and is available in four different finishes with matching handles including White (M1TXEGMYW), Bisque (M1TXEGMYQ), Black (M1TXEGMYB) and Stainless Steel (M1TXEGMYS). Its doors are also reversible, so they can fit no matter how your kitchen is configured.
Overall, Maytag only receives average ratings from J.D. Power & Associates in their 2013 refrigerator study, but it does earn slightly higher ratings when it comes to price. According to Consumer Reports, Maytag refrigerators are considered to be the most reliable when compared to other refrigerators with factory-installed automatic icemakers. This particular model also receives excellent feedback from Consumer Reports on its energy efficiency and very good feedback on its temperature performance, which is impressive considering its price. However, its warranty isn't as good as some higher priced competitors. It is only covered by a 1-year limited warranty on parts and labor.
The Maytag M1TXEGMY Top-Freezer Refrigerator with FreshLock™ Crispers has received good feedback from customers online including a 4.2/5 on HomeDepot.com (1,129 reviews) and a 4.3/5 on Maytag.com (777 reviews). If you are looking for an affordable refrigerator for a smaller kitchen or family, this is an impressive, basic machine that has good useable capacity for its size. The features that are advertised (automatic icemaker, humidity-controlled crispers, adjustable shelving, etc.) are great but pretty standard for new refrigerators. Even though it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, most customers have been very happy with the M1TXEGMY's overall value in terms of price, quality and performance.
The M1TXEGMY's biggest drawback seems to be that it only has one knob to control the temperature in the fridge as well as in the freezer. A lot of customers complained that either the food in their fridge would freeze or the food in the freezer would be soft. Additionally, there is no light inside the freezer, which a few customers felt made it difficult to find items. Some customers also complained about the design of the fridge, particularly the drawers and adjustable shelves. Certain reviewers felt the crispers were too small for bulky veggies and some even complained about the lack of control over the level of humidity. Some customers also were annoyed with the adjustable shelves being "sticky" and generally not fitting properly. That said, if you are on a budget and don't want to spend more than $1000 on a new refrigerator, the Maytag M1TXEGMY is a very good buy and will also save you money in energy costs in the long run.
