Black & Decker is a trusted home appliance brand that produces an impressive line of affordable coffee makers. For busy caffeine lovers, Black & Decker offers a single serve budget coffee maker known as the Brew 'n Go Personal Coffee Maker (DCM18S). The Brew 'n Go is a simple, straightforward machine that uses traditional drip brewing technology to make just one 15-ounce cup of coffee at a time. Unlike other single serve coffee makers that require expensive prepackaged pods, the Brew 'n Go uses regular coffee grounds and has a permanent reusable filter. For additional convenience, the Brew 'n Go brews your coffee directly into a thermal stainless steel travel mug within three minutes and then the machine shuts off automatically, so you can head straight out the door without leaving any wasted coffee or extra mess behind. The Brew 'n Go has a compact footprint and universally-appealing design that makes it perfect for a crowded countertop or desktop.
The Black & Decker Brew 'n Go Personal Coffee Maker (DCM18S) can be purchased online for about $19.99.
We give Black & Decker’s Brew ‘N Go DCM18S a B+ because it has all of the convenience of a single serve coffee maker without the high price tag. We also like that it doesn’t take up a lot of room on your countertop and that it is really easy to clean. While it is a great coffee maker in this price range, we deducted points because the brew time and temperature are both less than optimal for the best flavor extraction. Additionally, we deducted a couple of points because some customers complained that the grounds occasionally overflowed into the mug and that there is a post-brew drip for about 5 minutes, which can create a mess.
Pros
Cons
The Black & Decker Brew 'n Go Personal Coffee Maker has received good feedback from customers online including a 4/5 on Amazon.com (1507 Reviews). Despite the popularity of the brewer, it was difficult for us to gather accurate specs and details about it. We read the user manual, consulted numerous websites and spoke with Black & Decker's customer service, but none of these sources could provide us with exact information on the machine's dimensions, heating coil construction material and brew time. While the Brew 'n Go is easily available online, we visited 6 of our local retail stores to ask them about the machine and none of them currently had it in stock.
That said, owners of the Black & Decker Brew 'n Go consistently expressed high satisfaction with the brewer. Value, simplicity and convenience for the on-the-go coffee drinker were cited as top features. Since it is one of the few single serve drip coffee makers designed for use with loose coffee grounds placed in a permanent filter, it is much more economical than machines that require K-Cups and paper filters. Reliability also received high marks from reviewers with one person enjoying their machine for almost 8 years.
Some of the negative reviews touched on the potential for the grounds to overflow into the mug and the machine itself if the filter is not properly seated or if you overfill it with grounds that are too fine. Fortunately, the brewer is reportedly easy to rinse out in the event that an overflow occurs. Another annoyance noted was a post brew drip of about 5 minutes, which can get messy if the mug has been removed. All in all however, it is hard to beat the price/performance of the Black & Decker Brew 'n Go when it comes to single serve budget coffee makers.
